Bangladesh's booming leather industry brought in more than $460 million in revenue last year.

But the human cost is also high, with many workers suffer from diseases related to exposure to the fumes of a toxic chemical called Chromium.

Chromium is banned in most countries because of its devastating effects on the human body, including causing cancer.

Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from the tanneries in the capital, Dhaka.

  • This is shameful. But how come I only get to know about this in a short 2 minute video on youtube, while all of the major networks in the US are talking about celebrities and shit?

  • Enjoy the smell of unregulated capitalism (and the smell of death).

  • Where's the UN?

  • @HDaviator So you'll keep buying the shoes that bring them the profit off these people's suffering. The more those poor leather workers suffer, the more the big-wigs profit.

  • We handle West's dirty jobs

  • very informative video

  • Search also on youtube water matters, Safety matters, environment matters, energy matters by UNIDObeta. it is already positive for workers. Let s hope it will help them

  • And Justin Bieber is the fous of all people in th eowrd

  • why does the govnerment in that country allow this? the West can not buy these things if the country would outlaw the use of these chemicals. how are people in the West to know what the working conditions are in such a far away place?

    the owners of the industry and the govnerment of the country are wrong to allow this. shame on them.

  • money is for today health is forever

  • Just once, I'd like to see reporting like this on U.S. "news" channels! Actually there are 2 channels that show Al Jazeera World News; FreeSpeechTV and LINKTV .. They are hidden at the end of the channels in the 9000s {where most people won't find them}
