Traditional South Indian Classical meets South Indian Cinema
A.R. Rahman's “Nenjinile Nenjinile” is the perfect combination, a soft touch of traditional South Indian classical music fused onto the structure and beats of popular South Indian cinema melody. This song is modeled after an old Sanskrit bhajan tune originating from Kerala. It begins with a few devotional chants alongside a yearning voice, only to be conquered by thumping percussions.
Featured in the film Uyire, Nenjinile Nejinile is one of the most renowned cinema songs of the South. Much like the duality of the song, this dance combines movement from the traditional South Indian classical dance form known as Bharathanatyam with popular dance movements from South Indian cinema. It will be performed with diyas, clay lights native to India, that are often used in celebrations as well as in the beginning of events as a welcome and blessing.
