yeah well ... I guess Jackson used this to show that even Gandalf couldn't stand against the Witchking, but Èowyn managed to kill him ...

The Witch-king didn't break Gandalf's staff in the book. They just sat staring each other down for a little while. They were just about to fight when the horns sounded.
