How to tell your friends you're a transsexual

In 2004 a friend in a support group asked "How do you tell your friends and family that the whole life you've been living is a lie, and that you're really a transsexual?" My response was a rough version of the poem below, which I've recently brushed off and chipped of the clunky edges. I hope you enjoy it.

How to tell your friends you're a transsexual

(With all due apologies to Theodore Geisel)

You can tell them on a train
It will really fry their brain
You can tell them on a plane
They will think you are insane

You can tell them in a park
They will laugh at such a lark
You can tell them in the dark
Their response may well be stark

And they will not like it,
Ann I am.

You can tell them over pork
They might stick you with a fork
You can tell them "'twas the stork!"
They'll think you are a dork

You can tell them what is true
They will think you're lacking glue
You can tell them *THIS* is you
But they'll wonder what to do

And they will not like it,
Ann I am.

Telling one is SUCH a stress
The second somewhat less
The third might be a mess
Who cares about the rest

But some will be ok
And you'll live another day
As the old you starts to fray
And the new you's here to stay

And you will like it,
Ann I am.

How is it that, if I'm transgendered & I don't disclose, my whole life is a lie? I'm also an athiest. I don't talk about that. Does that make my whole life a lie? I dislike professional sports. I don't tell people that. Is my life a lie? Yes, I am transgendered & no I don't talk about it. But it doesn't make my whole life a lie! Let's not blow the balloon up until it bursts! I think we can make too big a deal out of this & thus make it seem much more traumatic than it needs to be. ( Nice poem!)
