Fractalia, by Owen Clayton Condon, features a group of four musicians making their way around a familiar marimba quartet set up, with an additive tom-tom element. The variety of sounds used span from the sides of the drums, the heads of the drums, as well as the marimbas to create a multitude of textural ideas that fit together to create a soothing, yet sometimes intense blanket of sound. Structurally speaking, listeners can pick up on almost fugal moments of this piece as certain initial ideas of the piece are repeated sequentially by each player, usually at an 8th note apart.
