http://www.scene-stealers.com Eric Melin and guest co-host Nick Colby (bassist for The Dead Girls) review the new Oliver Stone George W. Bush biopic "W." Many will come away from Oliver Stone's movie feeling sympathetic towards the George W. Bush, who never lived up to poppy Bush's expectations, and that is why the film is so devastating. Josh Brolin is excellent, and has the same natural charm that got Bush elected, and Stone's movie suggests what we've seen is what we get. That's all there is to this president. If "W." feels empty, that's because it reflects the soul of the man whom it is about.

  • I totally agree with you. This movie made me root for bush even though in real life I hate him.

  • what's so devious about the film is that it presents the life of this person who's made so many poor decisions as the typical underdog hero of Hollywood movies.

  • you guys actually think w. was the worst president of all time? look at clinton, he was 10x worse! u guys r fucking chokes

  • pretty sure that the recent victory on tuesday by obama and democrats prove that most of america agrees with my remark about bush

  • I find it stunning that hollywood critics are so divided with this movie. Oliver Stone finally made a politically driven film that is grounded in reality at least on some level. The fact that critics do not like this movie because it is too "sympathetic" towards Bush just shows how politically motivated and bias many people are. I voted for Kerry in the last election but I am smart enough to understand that Bush is not some evil mastermind; he is an average guy way over his head.

  • I'm disappointed by the overall critical reaction as well. Having seen the film twice now, I can safely say that it's not as sloppy as some first suggested. Bush may be the protagonist that we are made to feel sorry for, but it's only at his lack of leadership in the first place. Being "way over your head" is not a good thing when you are talking about being the president, so Stone plays our expectations against us.

  • @loverofbeats well sayd

  • @SceneStealers the election in this November seems to disagree with you though, took 2 years to hate bush, took 8 to hate bush

  • i didn't really like the film, but when i saw this film, it made me "feel" for Bush.

  • @zapstrung Very pertinent comment about a much underrated movie. It explores Bush Jr's psyche pretty well. It's a compassionate look at a totally incompetent president, it's certainly not sympathetic to him. As Stone clearly said, he loathes Bush.

  • that's very true. also bush 43 has the second highest recorded approval rate of any president ever, that was after 9/11

  • Yep, and sploogersmoof told a little lie when he said that "bush still has a lower approval rating then any other president in history". In fact, Harry Truman had 22% approval at one point in his presidency and Nixon got as low as 24%

Whereas Bush, Jr.'s rating only went as low as 29%.

A small point, but a point nonetheless.

  • obama is doing the same thing as bush.

  • "the worst president ever";abe; has been applied to bush by society at large. he had the lowest approval rating of any president in history, and he screwed up every single thing more then any other president in history. people were warning him the whole time, also. but he just kept going with his retarded policy's and when they failed he blamed "the evildoers".

  • AND, when Carter won, my in-laws were invited to the inaugural ball in Washington DC. They also got Christmas cards and gifts every year from Carter while he was President ( I have proof). I never said Carter was a bad man, I just think his ideas were not the best for the nation..I think we are seeing this happen again as we speak.

  • And what sources are you using to promote your fact? You just don't like Bush. That's your right, but the fact remains that Bush got 2 terms while being "the worst President ever". And, if you think that this is some sort of personal thing against Carter. My Father-in-law was a rather high ranking (and well respected) member of our community and he campaigned for Carter when he ran and Jimmy Carter's son, Chip, actually spent the night at my in-laws house here while in Chicago.
