Coorie doon, Coorie doon, Coorie Doon, my darling,
Coorie doon the day.

Lie doon, my dear, and in your ear,
To help you close your eye,
I'll sing a song, a slumber song,
A miner's lullaby.

Your daddy's doon the mine my darling,
Doon in the Curbly Main,
Your daddy's howkin' coal my darling,
For his ain wee wean.

There's darkness doon the mine my darling,
Darkness, dust and damp,
But we must have oor heat, oor light,
Oor fire and our lamp.

Your daddy coories doon my darling,
Doon in a three foot seam,
So you can coorie doon my darling,
Coorie doon and dream.

  • @crc778Hypnodoc It means snuggle down x

  • the term "timeless classic" gets thrown about a fair bit, but here's the genuine article.

  • @DonegalRaymie201 Thanks very much, thought it was on those lines but good to have the correct definition

  • @crc778Hypnodoc

"Settle down to sleep" or "snuggle down" if you prefer!

It's Lallans Scots, the very thing a mither wid say tae her weans/bairns in tryin tae get them aff tae sleep, if ye ken?

  • Anyone know what Coorie Doon means?

  • new one to me, lovely song

  • rip the gleision 4.

  • Thoughts with the welsh miners and their families !

  • very interesting and thx for taking the time to respond, interesting that the niners choose a sort of military type of danse to celebrate, good stuff.

  • @edward0988 This a Rapper Sword Dance. The 'sword' is a flexible metal strip with a wood handle at each end. Still danced regularly, mostly in Northumberland - very tricky, needs a lot of stamina and enough strength to lift another dancer.
