Japanese Drummers Amaze Ukrainian Audience

A troupe of Japanese drummers, "Yamato", is recognized as one of the best drummers in the world. They gave their first concert in Ukraine on Monday. Our correspondents in Kyiv saw this unique performance, a combination of ancient instruments, dance and theater.

Known to many as the "Best Drummers of Japan", the company "Yamato" performed for the first time in Ukraine. Ancient instruments, with rhythms tuned with heartbeats, and the colors of the theater, charmed the audience.

[Masaaki Ogawa, Head of "Yamato"]:
"The sound of Taiko drums has energy and power for human beings. We try to give our energy to the audience and we try to encourage each other."

In Japan, the 11 members of the group train daily to achieve both a harmonious and powerful sound.

[Masaaki Ogawa, Head of "Yamato"]:
"We are starting from 7 am. We do running about 10 kilometers a day, and then after that we eat something, then after that we do weight training until lunch time, and we do shadow drumming. And after lunch we do drumming trainning until going to the bed."

The show involves many different types of drums, with the biggest one having a diameter of 5.5 feet and weighing around 1,100 pounds, but with one thing in common: each drum is made from a single piece of wood. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the ancient sounds, accompanied by theater and dance, amaze the audience.

"It was a real show. Quality sound, unreal emotions, brightness, imagination and rhythm, and the technology and culture of Japan were all combined in one."

"It was good, I really liked it and I will try to do the same thing at home."

The "Yamato" drummers give more than 200 concerts a year. For nearly 20 years, they have played over 7,000 concerts worldwide.
