The mining towns/ghost towns you mentioned, are they open to the public?

fewer and fewer are
Places I used to climb around on ten years ago are now fenced off or new homes now..
But some are ownwed privatly and the respect of a phone call can go a long way

You can download the military manuals for free from globalsecurity*dot*org/military/library/policy/army/fm/

good point..
I printed a copy of the Ranger handbook at 25% scale and was able to print 4 pages per page, on a laser printer it's very readable still
