This is a cover of "Stop Breaking Down" from the White Stripes' 'Peel Sessions' with BBC. This is a shorter version of what I originally wanted to post--I kept going over my 100MB limit. So, I trimmed the fat, left out the breaks, and just did a few verses.

Tuning: Open A
Main Riff: (Low A string): Open, 3, 4, Open / (High E string): 5, 3, 5
Now, with this riff, it works great if you hit the string below the A string on the first part and the string above the high E on the second part--gives it a fuller sound.
Chorus Part: Full barres (with slide): 5--Open, 5--Open, (high E part), 7, 5, 5--Open (high E), back to main riff.

The basics of this song are really easy--it's the embellishing that takes work (as is the general case with open tunings). Cheers.

ADDED NOTE: I have since put up two small tutorial for how to play the basic parts of the song. Please check out my profile videos if you're interested in learning to play it.
ADDITIONAL NOTE (3/12/08): pusomeyo has added a video of them playing this at their '99 Gold Dollar show--it is this version and you can see Jack's hands pretty clearly.

  • Quick question, after you pluck the open A string for the 2nd time (as in, the 4th note of the opening riff), do you pluck the high E string simultaneously? If so, how (i.e. do you hold the pick between your thumb and forefinger when picking the A string, and pluck the high E with your ring finger?)

Also, when you're playing the second part of the riff, are you strumming UP or strumming DOWN

    Thanks!

No, I don't hit the high e at that point--I usually try for the A and D strings together for that spot. Down strumming on the other part. :)

  • What kind of Guitar is that?

I've never seen that headstock inlay before, but I sure dig its sound!

  • All of my guitars are listed on my profile page; to be brief though, it's a 1966/67 Vox.

  • where's the solo? :(

  • I wasn't really able to do good solos when I recorded this--I'm a little better at slide solos now, but still not great...

  • Great Blues. Lov that track

  • Hey, very good man. I've seen some of your other videos, your video actually helped me learn lord send me an angel. Keep em up, I just posted a video of my cover, I did it on an acoustic that needs the neck realigned, action or whatever its called. I was too lazy to retune my electric but after watching yours I wish I had. Anyways, just wanted to say good job and keep them up, as a beginner at guitar in the blues rock genre I cannot begin to thank you enough for these. They help alot.
