Well like Clark, speaking for Newton, because Newton couldn't hold a debate with anyone, said that space exists, because we can see acceleration of an object and acceleration needs space. But how can one see, let alone measure acceleration, without a reference point? The waterbucket's reference point is the ground, we can see that something is happening to the water in the bucket, because it does not fall to the ground.
