i have done them both ways and found cab has to come up to replace the turbo but i leave the turbo on the engine for head gaskts.i now even leave the manifolds attached to the exhaust pipes.just pull out the whole stud from each end of the manifold.i also pull the whole steering shaft from the base of the collum (inside truck) makes alot of room.i really does only take about 2/3 hrs to remove a cab.these engines are heavy and cumbersome to lift out over the radiator support

here in Mexico all of the mechanics are a fucking idiots

@ATVer85 I've done it both ways, Much easier with the cab off.

@bddc201 Gas block into a diesel? Are you refering to the old 5.7? BTW, Ford does the same thing to R&R turbos, and head gaskets. I'm not arguing against you, you just didn't point the finger @ all the culprits. It's not just GM. They are all mass produced, 3rd world manufactured, margin designed shit.

@mikenike3311 Every company has their issues, that's certainly true. But when the cab and doghouse have to be removed just to swap out a head gasket, that's an impossible to ignore blunder of epic magnitude. And as for trying to turn a gas block into a diesel, only insane greed and willfull incompetence would allow something like that to become a reality. GM has fucked up way too many times to get any more of my business. They're not even trying anymore.

@bddc201 really? you really think that is a put down to GM? every one of the three US truck companies have have their fare share of screw ups bud.
You can replace headgaskets without cab removal. I've done it. :)
