Perfect ending:
"The horror...the horror..."
*everything gets blown up*

I remember watching this sequence in the theater back in '79, so it was deleted after the initial release. IMO this perfectly captures what befalls all peoples and nations that naively work for western governments, they will be turned on and destroyed.

For me, the movie was the best as it was release in the cinema in 1979. All this Director's cut and other ending make the movie look dumb. The ORIGINAL was just PERFECT in my eyes and couldn't be made better...

@nlanich,,Kurtz wasnt emulating the VC simply because he saw 'genius' in their methods...You honestly think audiences were stumped as to who was capable of more horror? What fucking planet would they have had to be living in? This ending doesnt suggest shit like what you're claiming..its boring and if you think because of a climactic ending this movie would rank better than the Godfather (which it already does) you probably need to stick to the Godfather. More of an obvious tale.

Alternate ending? I saw the very same ending in the theater during its first run. Canoga Park California, 1979.
-
@nlanich That ending was intended to parallel the ending of Heart of Darkness more
-
Seeing this scene, the Doors were right I suppose. At the beginning it was day and now after the journey into the darkness...the act is in shadows. Damn
-
@MrBaebel the horror is not only in the location, it is in the shadows everywhere, in all of man. People must make a choice, Williard chose darkness. Coppola showed this brilliantly, every scene where you can see the contrast making Williard a silhouette is epic. When he killed the woman on the sampan to get a move on, the screen fades and you see Williard as a shadow and later when he pauses with the festival in the background, Williard is again a shadow. Good job
This was not actually an alternate ending. Coppola was required by the Philippine government to destroy the kurtz compound when he was done shooting this is just the footage of him destroying the compound

@madcowjr1999 that's true, but it was used as an alternate ending in some versions of the film. some versions have actually incorporated this as an actual scene rather than just a set getting blown up. notice the changing camera angles.

This ending is far more powerful than Brando babbling "The Horror!".
The incendiary bombing suggests that the more powerful society is capable far more horror than Kurtz and the VC he emulated ever were. "Power corrupts" makes a complete circle here.
With this ending Apocalypse Now would be rated as superior to The Godfather by nearly everybody.

@nlanich as far as your last statement goes, that's not necessarily true. the reason this ending was not put in the theatrical release is because it was met with much criticism from audiences and critics during screenings of the movie. while i would agree it is a superior ending, it wouldn't necessarily have made the movie superior to the godfather.

Not facing the cruel brutal animalistic part in us causes "The Horror", not accepting that we humans are the most vicious and deadliest species ever populated this planet.
Do one remember what Kurtz said about the cut off arms of the little babies? - Charly's never haunted by "The Horror" because he is able to face the beast, to stare directly into its eyes, emotionless, without passion he does what has to be done. For Charly there are only 2 simple ways out: being extinct or survive.

@MrBaebel Now that I think about it, the horror is not what's inside us, the horror is just an awakening. Inside every man is a beast, an instrument of war, rape, violence, and the desire to conquer. The horror just activates the beast within us, much like it is in war. War and all it encompasses is the horror, and within every man is a heart of darkness that the horror needs to survive.
