It was more the plan itself was retarded. If they would have retroed with some sort of A.P.U. turbine or something I could dig it. But rocket packs blowing right into the pilots face may lead to a crummy landings which it indeed did, and the last one was really bad.

@TheZa1994 rocket exhaust gases burn up to 5000 degrees, also the front rockets probably blinded the pilot and you can see how the plane drops on the ground ritght before touch down. and all the fuel is in the wings of the plane so when the plane dropped on the ground the right wing broke and the fuel caught fire.
