I don't think people in general realize that the advantages and disadvantages of one WWII aircraft design vs. another were compensated for with great piloting skill and tactics. The P40 had a lot of disadvantages but when minimized via tactics were deadly to the enemy. I'm sure the same holds true today with moder jet fighters it's just that there hasn't been a war between equal sides to exploit these traits. Thank God for that.

@ahz123 Re-read my post. I specified WWII aircraft. Replying to @ReFleXG4M1NG's claim that it was one of the best three planes of WWII, not the best plane of "ever". So no, I did not specify early war vs. late war, razor-back P-51 vs. bubble canopy P-51 etc. That said, it's a beautiful restoration job and its great to have old warbirds flying.
