I wrote this song five years ago for the American Landscapes album. The song came to me on a golf course one day when i was alone. It was a cloudy day up in the mountains and the wind started to blow. I was thinking about how my favorite groups of all time, the Beatles Beach Boys, would never be seen again live. With the loss of two key members things could never be the same.

Even though I did not grow up in the 60s scene, both groups were so important to me as a songwriter. My only conection I have with the Beach Boys is that I first lived in Hawthorne California three blocks over from them. My aunt also took care of Dennis & Carl's mom once when she was sick.

Sometimes I do not understand why I write what I do. This song with the words just came to me one day for no reason. On the recording Steve took the first lead, then Rick, and I took the last verse. I at least got to play my harmonica at last.

Looking back now to the year of 2004, our band also lost two key members. Ken Darby died the day before the Cd American Landscapes was to mastered. Three days after his death I remember being in the studio and listening to this track and how it all felt more personal. It was hard to listen to this song for me with the loss of Ken. You might notice that Steve's voice was a little weak on the lead track. He had major vocal cord work surgery just two months before the recording. When I heard his vocal it sounded so sad to me that I left it as it was. Fellow band member Lloyd Jones Jr. died six months earlier. We miss both of them so much and their music as we also miss Carl, Dennis, George, & John.

  • Any truth to the rumor that Paul & Ringo, with Brian, Al, and Mike might record together? What a great band that would be for old times sake!!

  • Through teary eyes I feel compelled to applaude you for pouring your heart right into this song. There was indeed a reason the lyrics came to you on that cloudy, windy day. I thank you for putting these words to song and sharing with the world your love and admiration for 4 fallen warriors who the world adored. I belive Carl, Denny, George & John would be chuffed that you remembered them in those most beautiful way. I will return to this post when I too feel the need to heal.

  • Thank you so very much for your heart felt words.

  • well done. beautiful song. i especially like the harmonica. for some reason it just seems really fitting.

  • At the time I thought the harmonica gave it a sweet, but sad sound. In the bands history I've only played it on three songs.
