Intelligence for the Humanoid Robot ASIMO: A Synthetic Approach to Understanding Principles of Processing in the Brain.
I would like to welcome you to the web site of the Honda Research Institute Europe (HRI-EU).

The Honda Research Institute Europe is one of three basic research units Honda inaugurated in a bold and foresighted move in 2003. It is our mission to contribute to the future of our society and thereby to the future of Honda by pursuing emerging technologies.

By translating principles of biological information processing systems into unique and innovative technology, the team at the Honda Research Institute Europe strives towards becoming the Centre of Excellence for Intelligent Systems Research in Honda.

The human brain demonstrates that robustness, functional autonomy and cognition in unconstrained environments are possible. Hence, an understanding of the brain is the most promising way towards the creation of intelligent systems.

In order to understand the brain, we follow an "analysis through synthesis" philosophy. We set the architectural and processing constraints for self-assembly through evolution and learning of the artificial system in interaction with the environment.

To progress from pre-programmed skills to learnt and thereby actively acquired behaviour provides us with the key for a new class of systems: systems whose architecture and dynamics provide the basis for brain-like intelligence.
I hope you enjoy this concise introduction to the work of our institute.

  • With the all the due respect, I think you have seen too much movies and TV, ASIMO is great step for the engineering, and I think you have no clue about all the good technology that is behind ASIMO.

  • Given the complexity of human cognition, and the challenges to producing a useful architecture (for anything, by anyone), compromise is inevitable. I'm thinking, why not converge from above, instead of below, for a better resultant compromise. Calibration constructs notwithstanding, is human intelligence really the best conceptual model? It's impressive, but in my opinion they've set their sites too low. Then again, they have a robot, and I don't, so don't take this too seriously.

  • At 33 min he says that a more elegant solution would be an artificial skin but – for the Asimo robot – that's a thing that is still to come.

Well, for the iCub robot it is already here: watch?v=yQGXYGS0Ojo

  • you know... most ppl listen to music...but you know i'm bored when i listen to this in the background noise D:

  • good , but the program should work with internet to make a better relationship and links with the objets to give more information

  • When Asimo is fallen he can't stand UP!!

  • I don't think that Honda really has a virtual DNA simulator. They may be able to evolve a virtual hydra but if you replace the virtual hydra DNA with virtual mouse DNA their simulator won't evolve you a virtual mouse.

  • have some of youve ever thought that when a child sees a robot it will try to get a response by screaming pushing and so on but when a robot sees a child the robot evaluates the child.

btw this Maye not make sense

  • I think they should start getting asimo to do things like pick up objects off the ground like a can but that would take a lot of research.

  • @elmegapeluco It's one thing to recite an encyclopedia, but an entirely extraordinary thing to actually realize, and comprehend that information.

  • @deepdivestudios

I believe only experimentation may help but the human model evolved for millions of years; now that does not mean it is the best of course but some parts are worth copying to technology and other we can leave out.

  • With increased computing power, this can only get better of course. Grasping objects takes much more than I thought.
