Edible Geography: Municipal Water Tasting.
Wellington draws its water from different sources and delivers it to different parts of the region. Some parts of the region such as the Kapiti Coast use bores and use rivers. Wellington uses waters from the Tararuas and also the Pakuratahi Forest catchment in the Rimutakas via a tunnel through Wainuiomata. Petone has bore water and the Petone municipal public bore is used night and day by people who lug 20 litre containers to fill for domestic use. Tory St in central Wellington has a 470 feet bore that was used as the basis for a soft drink factory. The current owners of the site have installed a magnificent sculpture marketing the spot and have reopened the bore for public use.
Does all our regional water taste the same? We would expect the answer should be no, because of the variations in terroir just like wine. This tasting is to find out.
