Captured my sleepy cat with my new (used obviously since this lens is older than me) Mamiya M42 mount 55mm F/1.4 lens. I got the lens on eBay for $99 including shipping.

ISO 400, 1080-30P, F/1.4, 1/60th shutter.

As you can see, the depth of field is extremely shallow. It's not even deep enough to keep the cat's nose and face focused at the same time in close range. But it is a very cool effect and the low light ability is absolutely amazing. There's no way I could shoot at ISO 400 in this light without a prime F/1.4 lens.

The manual focus does require a lot of rotation (270 degrees) to go from near to infinity but that gives you very precise control over focusing. The manual focus ring feels very good and smooth in the hands.

I also had a little fun with this image.

  • Seems like this lens is more sharp than takumar 50mm 1.4. Whot kind of adapter U used?

  • @kubickirobert Just a ring adapter with no glass.

  • what adapter did you use??

  • @bjarni1995 Just a cheap M42 metal ring adapter I got off of eBay. I pretty much keep the adapter on the lens. The adapter needs no optics whenever the lens diameter is larger than the camera mount. Since Canon mounts are smaller than most of the others, almost all the other lens types except the old Canon mount will work without any optics.

  • @georgeou NOOB ALERT.. what do you mean Optics??

  • @bjarni1995 What I mean is that there is no glass (no lens) in the adapter. All it needs is a metal ring.

  • does the focus ring move back and forth when you twist it to focus? can you put a follow focus unit there?

  • @MNPtests i dont have these lenses, but i figure that you should be able to see everything it does. just cant control anything on the lens automatically, but like said before, who needs to with video anyways

  • Jesus christ is king of all mankind

  • @MNPtests Everything works well. You just don't get auto-focus, but that doesn't work well for video anyways.

  • @georgeou aaahhhhh thank you for the information :D
