And for those who doubt the.f-14 was a great plane in it's day. Even today it would give most countries a run for their money. I don't think any one aircraft is all superior to another. It depends on what mission you need them for. But if you want to say on paper what was the best I'd have to say the f-15 eagle. It has been in over 100 dogfight & has never been downed in air combat which gives it over a 100/0 ratio. Those stats will probably never be broken especially as we move into an age of

The reason there are gaps in the numbers such as no f-11 f-12 or f-13 is because those were aircraft that somewhere between concept design & building they never came to be. But if you do some looking there is a plane whether on paper a model or a failed full scale version for each number. The f-14 f15 f16 are just jets that made it all the way to production. An example would be there is an f-22 but no f-23. The f-23 competed against the f-22 & lost the contract to the air force

The 14 in f-14 has nothing to do with design changes or power. If you trace back to ww2 aircraft had a p designation such as p51 p-38 p-47 & so on after ww2 they changed p=persuit to f=fighter. The numbers represent each aircraft built it went all the way to f-111 but because the numbers were getting so high the started back at 1 which is why you have the f-4 phantom f-5 tiger & so on.

@TomcatSucks4ever2 the number has nothing to do with power, thats the design number. The F is the mission of the acft, F=fighter, A=Attack and so on.the 14 ,16,or 18 is the design number, it went through so many design changes until on the 14, 15th etc it was excepted, last letter is the series of major mods made to the acft. So We have Mission, design , and series.
