wouldn't the one cut in the 'loop' that it forms get really annoying?

like, if instead of being a 1x16, wouldn't it be much more manageable as a 2x8, forming one continuous loop that's 1 piece wide? It looks like it has the feel of falling apart.

this is true, however its actually quite stable as is.
