2 days of climbing the 6.088 meter Huyana Potosi mountain near La Paz, Bolivia in January 2009. It will give you a good idea about what to expect if you plan on doing this. It's not very technical but you will have to deal with 1500 meter elevation a day in six thousand meters without air.
Mountain: Huayna Potosi
Mountain range: ANDES, Cordillera Real
Country: BOLIVIA
Elevation: 6,088 metres (19,974 ft)

Morning sunshine causes the snow to become less stable for walking, and increases avalanche risk from 8 am onwards. The views on a clear morning from the summit are unbelievable - the mountain is far higher than anything else anywhere nearby, and the Cordillera Real, Lake Titicaca, La Paz, and part of the Altiplano they reside on are all visible. Until early 2004 there was a guest book for summiting climbers to sign, unfortunately this overhang collapsed mid 2006 leaving the original metal container protruding out of the summit ridge hanging above the city of La Paz below.

  • that's what i had in my iTunes. I don't have the full album, just one song and the name is the one I mentioned below. That's all I could find.

    thx

  • the name of the song is King Arthur (by Hans Zimmer)

  • We did it exactly the same way. I think we started the climb on 3 January after spending few days in La Paz. Hypoxia is tricky, I had no problems going up but going down was a struggle. My buddy was fine.

Dealing with the altitude is very individual and has basically nothing to do with your physical condition. I was very fit and i had trouble, he wasn't fit at all and was fine. Definitely pack good quality sun glasses.

As for weather - we were lucky and had a clear sky for few minutes.

  • Hi! We are planning to climb Huayna next month. Was it difficult? What about altitude sickness? We will have just few days in Cuzco and La Paz before climbing - i don't think it is enough and i'm really afraid of it.... What do you think? What company made your climb?

  • as for the company: we just walked around downtown LaPaz and negotiated the best price/deal. They all try to rip you off, so, don't be nice and get the best deal! And make sure that they do what they promise to do, be tough!!

  • Can you tell me please the month of the year that you´ve climbed?

  • Really nice video.

I climbed Potosi 15 years ago. It's not that difficult for experienced climbers, but it's a rather long summit day with a few steep parts, and if you are not acclimated the altitude can be very dangerous. If you're more of a novice, pick a few other climbs first, or be on a team with a strong leader to keep an eye on you.

I likened it to climbing Mt. Rainier in the states, only it's much higher, the weather is usually better, and there's far less people.

  • Thank you, but right now I listened to all songs of the Soundtrack of King Arthur and couldn't find this one!? Do you konw exactly which one it is?

  • Can anybody tell me the name of this song?

  • @JamesFinn25 : Hey there, thank you for your answer. The prices are at 140 Euro now, but for this Experience it was still worth the money!!! What an amazing Trip!!! The Wild Rover sadly was full when I tried ... however we did have a few drinks in LaPaz ;-) ..... of course after the climb!!!

So, thanx again and good luck with all the upcoming climbs!

  • What a great climb. May i ask what the soundtrack is?

  • Funny, we have done something similar ourselves. We are currently publishing our videos about the days we spent in La Paz, before crossing la Cordillera Real... walking!!

We're still embarked in our adventure, just in case you want to check out our videos.

    Cheers!!

  • @BigWoschech I did it about a month ago and only paid roughly around 100 euros. All the gear, food, transfers were included. The agency I booked through is across the road from the WIld Rover hostel in La Paz........ p.s. make sure and have a few drinks in the Wild Rover....... good times ;-)

  • Very Amazing! I am also planning to do this in Jan 2011. It looks so stunning. Just a couple of questions?

    1. Did the Tour-Agency offer warm clothing or did you bring it yourselfe?

    2. If you brought it yourselfe, what kind of jacket did you wear and how many layers underneath?

    2. How much did you pay for the two days? Is $150 realistic?

Thank you very much for the inspiring video!

    All the best,

    Seb.
