My cover version of Leo Kottke's song. I play this on my 12 string in standard tuning, down 4 half-steps.

  • Great rendition. Leo would be proud. Do you play by ear or did you have tabs/sheet music?

  • Thanks! I'd have to say it's a little of both. Most of the tabs I find on the internet (and even some purchased sheet music) seem to have mistakes in them, but they make a good starting point when you also combine them with listening to the music.

  • You must be a Leo fan from way back. These are wonderful tunes. You do a fine job with them.

  • Thanks! I am, I guess. As a guitarist I was turned on to his playing back in the 70's. When I gave it up to raise a family, I swore that if I ever played again, I HAD to learn to play some of Leo's songs. Guess I kept my promise?

  • you rock, much better than mine, sob sob.

  • great job man. I love this song!!

  • hi thats nice playing greetings and merry christmas from germany

  • Very nicely done, I too have not been able to find music/tabs that have been accurate. You did a decent job constructing the song. You should post your tab online and help out many poor souls like myself =)

  • May I ask for them?

I'm doing a short concert for my friends soon and I would love to have this song added to the setlist.

    Thank you

  • I listened to the "armadillo" album till I wore out two of them. This is an excellent rendition of Brain of the Purple Mountain and sounds really close. Unfortunately, even after having Leo's early stuff burned into my brain, I really wasn't able to do much of it. Brought out some of my own stuff though so it's all good.

  • I see that neon guitar clock on the wall behind you...my parents bought one for my brother as a birthday gift just last week!

nice job with a tough Leo tune - look forward to checking out the others!
