This is fucking splendid. The darkness of those minor chord progressions combined with Catherine's spikey runs creates something quite unique. I'm glad he got a standing ovation that night. Akkermann was wonderful, but alomist too obvious. A talne tlike this is too easy to self indulge in. Too easy to show your tricks too early. Self restraint, avoidance of the same riffs and telling a story as the song builds are the markers of a true great. Zappa had it. Catherine had it too.
I remember seeing this at the time. I was due to see Focus the next evening at Hull ABC and was gutted to find Akkerman had split from them. The audience were a bit pissed off as well, because Catherine got boo'd when he was introduced.
At the end of the gig though he got a standing ovation. He was great. The band were awesome and it was one of the very best live gigs I ever saw.
The drummer had a large gong, and when he hit it (twice) the whole buiding shook, along with my teeth!
No one better to replace Jan Akkemman than Catherine. This guy has so much feeling play his guitar. His work on "Focus con Proby" is a great exemple. Long life to Focus!
@RastaSaiyaman It's actually David Kemper on the video but yeah you're totally right

@fabiopl People have placed Pierre Van der Linden at the same level as John Bonham, rightly so I might add.

Sorry for my typos; too keen to type my views whilst my brain was semi functioning and too much red wine.
