Young pigs that leave the sow and begin eating solid food are called weaner pigs.

Transcript: (Farrowing-to-finish pig farm)

John - This is what we call a weaner room here. This is where the pigs go after they are taken away from their mothers at about 3 to 4 weeks of age. They weigh between 10 and 12 kilograms.

I've just taken these in the last week from their mothers and we've put them all together with the others of the same age and the same size and so we call this the weaner room. And it's a specialized room just for pigs this size and we like to start them nice and warm.

The small pigs are comfortable when they're warm. We start out at about 29 degrees Celsius and slowly as they grow we'll bring the temperature down a bit. So everyday the temperature will go down a little bit and when they leave here at about 25 kilograms of weight the temperature in the room will be closer to 21 degrees. Kind of like how your classroom is at school.

They're fed specialized feed in those large stainless steel feeders. They also have access to water from what we call water nipples or water taps and there are four of them in every pen. And the manure and any water spillage all goes through the floor to the manure holding tanks underneath.

As you can see this room is completely built out of plastic and that's because before these piglets went in this room it was completely washed with high pressure hot water. And then completely disinfected and left to dry. And that again is a biosecurity thing, in order to eliminate as much disease pressure as possible.

  • Thanks!

  • @nogerdsurg exactly

  • I don't comment often but how come so many that have probably never been on a hog farm in their life seem to know so much about raising them?

Yes it is all about profit just as it would be if he were growing your organic tomaotes. Actually maybe he is.......they have to use the manure on something you know.

  • This is really, really gross to anyone who knows pigs. They need sunlight and fresh air and intellectual stimulation and substrate to root in. They also have tight social groups, and throwing them in with all these strange pigs is extremely stressful for them. They are only doing this to kill these babies in a couple of months. It's not about "health" it's about profit. Gross.

  • What?! Go have some BLT!

  • they will not die under their mother.
