Quaint, ancient, scenic, friendly, and secret. Secret? Yes, Taormina, it would seem, is the best kept secret in Sicily. Okay, it is kind of inaccessible. How many other towns in the world do you visit via elevator--eight stories up a little mountain from an enormous bus garage carved out of the side of that little mountain. The Taormina highway, with its 28 tunnels, is, itself, something of an engineering marvel. Thats the way the tourists come. Taormina is a tourist town with a view of the Mediterranean to die for.. It has been ever since the Greeks discovered the place over two thousand years ago. Sidewalk cafes, gelatica on every street corner, book stalls, street artists, botiques, souvenier shops, haut couture, museums, and of course the obligatory Grecco-Roman theater ruins. Toss in some ancient walls, a few too many churches, Medieval gates, a fountain (you can actually drink from this one), broad piazzas, broad pizzas...you name it, Taomina has all the tourist traits while not appearing particularly touristy. Okay, you might not want to LIVE there but, as they say, it's a great place to visit.
