  • @niceguy1068 Sadly the effort to (re)establish Welsh as a community language in places like Cardiff through Welsh schools has been astonishingly unsuccessful. The language the kids use outside the class is always English & I know a 32 year old bloke who went through the entire system in Welsh who can understand the gist of what I say to him if I tone down my natural Ceredigion dialect but literally can't string together a sentence of his own. He's a driving instructor so obv fairly intelligent!

  • It's great to see the Welsh language go through this 'renaissance'. My father is from Cardiff, but he doesn't speak a word of Welsh apart from the national anthem. He was raised in the '60s, when Welsh schools were still very much influenced by the centuries of English linguistic and cultural repression. When we came to visit Cardiff a few years ago, we heard teens and little children chatting naturally in Welsh, and that simply warmed my heart! :)
