  • The liver is responsible for breaking down proteins in your body. A by-product of protein breakdown is ammonia. Ammonia then detoxified by the liver and excreted from the body. With liver failure, the proteins are being broken down but the ammonia remains within the system. If the ammonia levels remain high, then this could cause damage to many orgrans but most importantly it could have neurological ramifications as well.

  • Regarding his liver, it wasn't breaking down old proteins very well; so this is the cause of increased ammonia present in the blood serum?
