@daelohmen In the past, the catholic church would burn people at the stake for holding unofficial, usually mystical, type views. You see it even in Islamic countries today where Suffis are persecuted. There's something about mystical beliefs that authority structures and society in general feel threatened by. So that's why secretive mystery schools formed, for protection. Of course this is dangerous, because some of them have been infiltrated by sociopaths.
