Eickhout: "Politicians lost their dreams, citizens see nightmares ahead"

Bas Eickhout, Member of the European Parliament for the Dutch Greens is irritated by politicians and directors of big companies who do not dare to look ahead. Eickhout made these remarks at a conference on climate change in the European Parliament, organized by the Greens.

"I have a dream, that's what Martin Luther King said, more than forty years ago. But in the current finacial and climate crisis, citizens feel that they are living in a nightmare."

Politicians have to show the way out of these crises. They have to make the decision to leave the fossil era behind. The many Chinese workers that die each year in the coal mines, the oil spill caused by Deepwater Horizon and the nuclear disaster in Fukushima show the necessity of a green economy based on renewable energy.

If we decide to switch, citizens will be able to breath clean air and we can decrease the cost of our
oil imports by billions. National and European employers' organizations are unfortunately opting for the old, risky, energy sources. That is not at all in favor of Europe and its citizens, argues Eickhout. He calls for a third industrial revolution: a green revolution.

GroenLinks-Europarlementariër Bas Eickhout ergert zich aan politici en bestuurders van bedrijven die niet vooruit durven te kijken. Eickhout zei dat in een toespraak op een klimaatconferentie
in het Europees Parlement, georganiseerd door de Groenen.

"Ik heb een droom, zei Martin Luther King meer dan veertig jaar geleden. Maar in de huidige financiële en klimaatcrisis hebben veel mensen eerder het gevoel in een nachtmerrie te leven."

Politici moeten de weg uit de crises wijzen en ervoor kiezen om het fossiele tijdperk achter zich laten, aldus Eickhout. De vele Chinezen die jaarlijks in kolenmijnen sterven, de olieramp met Deepwater Horizon en de kernramp in Fukushima wijzen op de noodzaak van een groene economie die draait op duurzame energie. Als we overstappen, kunnen burgers weer schone lucht inademen en nemen onze olie-importen met vele miljarden af. Nationale en Europese werkgeversorganisaties
blijven helaas kiezen voor de oude risicovolle energievormen. Dit is niet in het voordeel van Europa en haar burgers, volgens Eickhout, die oproept tot een derde industriële revolutie: een groene
revolutie.
