@UnAmericanBandstand Thank you! I too love old spirituals. Ahhhh. There's a great vid of
"Jesus does just what he said" by sam cooke & the soul stirrers AND a great version of Mavis' "Don't Knock" by New Grass Revival. If you love this, you'd love those :) With love!

@goldie0800 she is warm and comforting. That is how I would describe her and her songs. Shes a shoulder to lean on. Or- feels like it. Truly. Its just amazing. Precious.

@TheGodzillaGodzilla Janis got this from an old spiritual. She did her own thing with it as she usually did with old tunes. She made them her own kind of. In her own special way. Tp be honest- I never thought Id ever hear another version besides hers. The old spirituals are really hard to find. Even in books. Ive looked. But this is something very special.Very unique and its a gift to us. Beautiful. You can find the lyrics Janis used in this. I love old spirituals. Especially like these. x

@TheGodzillaGodzilla Janis made this a big song but no she didn't take writing credit for it
-
It's probably listed as a traditional song so Janis was credited for her arrangement...a la House Of The Rising Sun by the Animals
-
janis's version is a little different, but Odetta had been singing this for many years ...
-
I always thought Janis wrote this - anyone know?

What a fabulous voice Odetta has, can't find enough words to describe how she reaches one inside. Many thanks.

Janis Joplin was a huge fan of Odetta and credited her as an influence in her early music.
