Results from the National Financial Literacy Challenge reveal Americas most financially literate school is Old Rochester Regional Senior High School, with its three Junior Achievement classrooms. Congressman Barney Frank and Mass. Representative Bill Straus recognized their achievement on Monday, February, 23, 2009.
Facts:
•The National Financial Literacy Challenge is a voluntary, 35-question test that students take online to earn recognition of their financial knowledge. Its first offering was in May of 2008, with more than 46,000 test takers. The second challenge concluded December 12th and results for its participants are now known.
•Of 75,000 high school students taking the exam nationally, 54 ORR seniors scored in the top 25th percentile, and will be recognized by the U.S. Department of Treasury, sponsors of the challenge. Only one other school in the country topped 54 high-scorers --- Fergus Falls School in Minnesota --- but its 56 was achieved by 99 test-takers. Two ORR students, Scott Perry and Alex Goodman, are being honored for scoring in the top 1%. Last year, another ORR-JA student, Tucker Johnson, scored perfectly on the test and was personally recognized in Washington, D.C. by the Presidents Advisory Council on Financial Literacy.
•The 54 students were among 82 test takers at the school, all of which participated in a Junior Achievement course this Fall at ORR. The course is an augmented version of the JA presents the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program, or JA-NEFE (J.A. KNEE-fee). It features several hours of interactive lessons on budgeting, saving and investing, credit, identity protection and risk management. JA courses are taught by outside-of-school volunteers, usually from local businesses. Mr. Kim Frink, an advisor with Invest Financial, taught all three classrooms of economics students at ORR, through an especially active partnership with Erich Carroll, their daily teacher.
•The Old Rochester school district includes the 3 small towns of Rochester, Mattapoisett and Marion, Massachusetts, along the SouthCoast, between New Bedford and Cape Cod.
