Contractor Vs. Independent Contractor Or Consultant

Being Self Employed means paying for your own benefits, not getting bonuses and having no job security. For these inconveniences and risks, you get the ability to bill more for your time. Unfortunately if a company doesn't understand this you may not convince them to pay you more. As a Consultant you also need to be prepared for long intervals between when you start working and when you get paid. Net 30 can actually mean 75 days from when you start working and when you get paid.

His approach to have "contractors" and "independent contractors" is wrong. Workers are either employees or contractors/independent contractors/consultants (pick your favorite: they all mean the same legally). I am puzzled to as to whom he's directed this piece.

@1smithwilson They don't mean the same to Accounting, or to future employers. If I was an independent contractor or consultant to Microsoft, They would be my Client. I can put them on a CV as "Microsoft I did X,Y,Z" I don't have to say Volt: Contractor to Microsoft I did X Y Z. so instead of Volt or Excel I can say Microsoft was a Direct client.

Working as a contractor at Volt, MSFT could fire me, Or Volt Could Fire me. And MSFT was never a Direct Client
