Francis Ford Coppolas Tetro is a poetic drama about a family torn
apart by rivalries, secrets and betrayals. It centres on two estranged
brothers Tetro (Vincent Gallo), whose name is shortened from the familys
surname Tetrocini, and his younger brother Bennie (newcomer Alden
Ehrenreich who has critics comparing him to a young Leonardo DiCaprio.)
The film debuted as the opening night film in the Directors Fortnight at the
2009 Cannes Film Festival. It also marks the first original screenplay from
Francis Ford Coppola in more than 30 years, since The Conversation in 1974.
The story is set in La Boca, a bohemian Buenos Aires neighbourhood
inhabited early on by Italian immigrants. The Tetrocini family lived in
Argentina until the musical success of their domineering father (Klaus Maria
Brandauer), an acclaimed symphony conductor, took them to New York City.
Tetro long ago fled to La Boca, where he lives as a struggling playwright.
He had promised Bennie that he would return to New York for him but never
did. Now 10 years later, Bennie has shown up at Tetros apartment, demanding
answers. The brothers begin to relive the haunting truth about their past.
Also starring are Mirabel Verdu (Y tu mama Tambien) as Tetros girlfriend,
and Carmen Maura (Volver) as a powerful Argentine critic.
The film is shot in widescreen black and white with flashbacks in colour.
The soundtrack fuses the seriousness of classical music with the cheerfulness
of Argentine milonga and chamamé. The film is written and directed by Francis
Ford Coppola, whose legacy includes The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now.
Coppola himself comes from a musical family. His maternal grandfather was a
songwriter and his father was an Oscar-winning composer (The Godfather, Part II).

The plot began to lag in the second half but there was the movie packed enough of an emotional punch with startling visuals, heartfelt performances, and taut writing to make it one of my favorites of 2009.
