Labor unions haven't always been the bad guys. At Blair Mountain, our government bombed union workers who stood up to the mine owners for their oppressive practices.

  • 7/6/2011. I had never heard of this moment in history before I heard the july 4 broadcast of Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman, now 2 days ago. She interviewed John Sayles, the filmmaker (made "Matewan"), who mentioned in passing that it was the first time in recorded history that bombs were dropped from planes.

  • @mowgli2071 I'm not so sure that this was the first time bombs were dropped from planes. But what is appalling to note here is that the US government was dropping bombs on US citizens on US soil.

  • Save Blair Mountain! Appalachia Rising!

  • I loved the video and the history you included! You are helping take back the term redneck to it's real meaning. I am on the board of Friends of Blair Mountain and helped with the planning of the march. Now we are getting the Blair Mountain Museum started, it opens 9-4-11. As we watch the middle class shrink, we begin to realise the important role the unions have played in forming a strong middleclass. Your beautiful voice is helping get out our message.

Thank You with all my heart!

  • I was born in Logan and live in near Matewan. I love the story of the red bandanna army of Blair Mountain, Logan Co. WV. The beauty of the story is that a group of union men came together to stand up and fight for a better life. The term red neck was given to them by the coal company that wanted to connect red with communist reds, saying the union movement was communism. The UMW was the first union in history that stood on equal pay for blacks & whites - it's a proud history.

    Thanks for this!
