They were in fact referring to Iran's sponsorship of the Hezbollah's Shiite group in Lebanon & the Hamas in Palestine rather than Al Qaeda. Iran patently had nothing to do with 9/11 but then neither did Iraq or infact mosts Sunni. However it was Irans historic association with state sponsored terrorism that led to the outcry over him visiting ground zero not the suggestion they were involved in 9/11. Iran's state sponsored terrorism pre-dates Al Qaeda's existence by over a decade
