Workstation Audio Setup

I recently upgraded my computer speakers to an audiophile grade audio configuration for my workstation. I'm REALLY loving every moment of it. Sound is encoded using ASIO4ALL plugin via foobar2000. Using optical out to my D/A converter, which feeds into my NAD amp. See the video for complete hardware info.

Just curious if you've tried the system with and without the V-DAC, and if a noticeable difference is present? As mentioned in my previous reply, my system is pretty similar. Music sounds pretty good but I'm looking at the V-DAC to get a better sound from my CD player. Just looking for some insight. Thanks! P.S. MORE VIDEOS!!!!

Actually, my speakers are rather large for such a close field setup, and found that the HRT Streamer DAC sounds better for my current setup. The VDAC produced such a large soundstage (and amazing) sound stage that I ended up having to scoot my chair back to fully enjoy the music.

With the HRT Streamer, it wasn't as wide, but was very detailed and is perfect for close field listening.

Both DACs are amazing, but the VDAC is a miracle in a little black box. I have it setup in my living room...the sound quality blows everyone away :)

I just re-read your original question, and I don't think I actually answered it...hehe. Yes, I've heard my system without the DAC. Here are the most obvious issues without using the VDAC, and using the audio out from my MOBO.

1. serious hiss...even at low levels

2. popping sounds..epecially when using my mouse wheel and other peripherals.

3. sound is muddy, very little dynamics

4. the nad amp saves it from everything else :)

(cont) Since setting it up, I've found that setting the HRT Streamer as the output in foobar, instead of asio, displays a wider and more realistic soundstage, as well as a nice musical shimmer to the overall sound. This is after a 40 hr burn in on the HRT Streamer.

So, for now, asio4all is going to be on the sidelines ;)

Yeah, I think the Mordaunt and NAD configurations have a great sound together. ASIO4ALL sounded a bit better when listening to acoustic, blues and jazz. Funny thing is that I have my VDAC in the living room now, as I've received the HRT Streamer as a gift.
