@56ghostdancer you're a little off there...michael clarke was long gone at this point, gene parsons was indeed the drummer at this point in the band, having replaced kevin kelley, who had replaced clarke earlier. but given the fact that he could also play guitar, banjo, as well as sing and write, parsons stepped up from the drum stool often. in concert, he would often play banjo as well as sing and drum
I have the vinyl and use to listen to this, The Ballad Of Easy Rider, Deportee, and Tulsa County over and over again. That goodness for CDs because I live in South Korea now and don't have my records on me.
Gene Parsons was a genius songwriter and great at harmony. However, he was not the drummer, Michael Clarke was, Gene played guitar . I adored the Byrds and still do, listen to Untitled if you can find it anywhere.
Mister Rock and Roll couldn't stay is a reference to a gig in Central Park that the Byrds were doing with Chuck Berry. Berry blew off the gig due to the rain. Flying in a DC8 would cause nausea when you flew seated backwards.
I've met all the Byrds at some point, but the best time I had was a snowy night when the Refried Burritos were playing Iowa City in 1978. Had a great time talking to Gene Parsons and Skip Battin. Gene told me the background on this tune which has been criminally been left off two Byrds boxsets. What does McGuinn have against this Byrds classic? The leather jacket is a reference to John York who couldn't get into a restaurant with his mom because he was wearing one.
I've always wondered if the mushrooms in that mushroom pie weren't psylocibin. Would make a lot of sense.

I LOVE the Byrds, and this is my favourite Byrds song. Gene Parsons! What a magnificent musician, singer, songwriter, drummer. This is pure class.
