This is another motion blur test but it uses a new method to the previous ones, whereas both those tests were made by using supersampling in Sony Vegas this new method uses VirtualDubMod and the AviSynth plug in. This new software analyses the film and calculates motion vectors and actually blurs the image rather than just ghosting the image many times over, this gives the blur a much more realistic appearance. I am still experimenting with the settings and I hope to do some new tests using this method soon.

This method is used by Ross Scott in his machinima films such as Freeman's Mind and Civil Protection to give a very realistic and slick appearance to the footage, if you want to learn how to use this method you can buy his Tutorial DVD; Source Machinima Cinematography, you can get it here: http://www.noesisinteractive.com/training-modules-290.html

  • holy shit the car and sound is really awesome and where did you got it? but i dont see difference :(

  • I made this car and the sounds, they're in my Fueled mod vehicle pack.

There isn't a lot of difference between the clip with more blur and with normal amounts but it's just noticable if you look carefully. I was just experimenting with the settings.

  • Great job ! We'd love to see the resulting videos when you are finished so be sure to send us a link!

(and thanks for the link to the tutorial too!)

  • Thanks, You have an excellent range of tutorials. I have bought Source Machinima Choreography, Source Machinima Cinematography, Content Creation in XSI and Advanced Character Animation for Gamers with XSI. I hope to put this knowledge to good use as soon as my school exams are over and I have more free time to spend on film making.

  • Looks awesome, though I am a bit biased. Things that stick out, like wires and lamp posts still do fine using this method.

  • Thanks, I'm going to use this for all my future machinima films after I've finished my current project, I would love to have motion blur on it but I already finished most of the filming before I learned this and I don't really want to re-render everything. I did put motion blur into one other film and that was Life Of Death, it's a live action film but I needed to film one shot in Garrys Mod because I couldn't do It in real life, you may want to see it.
