Sea turtle watchers successfully completed an inventory Friday night, July 31, at Litchfield by the Sea. South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiast (SCUTE) Volunteer Goffinet McLaren says there were 58 live healthy babies. Lynn Geuder LOA did the final egg count. Volunteer Kay Mackall goes into the nest and produces turtle after turtle, while Vic Young counts the hatchlings. Mary Schneider talks to the many onlookers, while Geuber and Jeff McClary, SCUTE co-founder, supervise the entire event. While digging down the first six inches, Mackall finds a group of about four turtle hatchlings. It is my first experience digging and I found it exciting, she says. Co-Founder Jeff McClary says SCUTE works under the guidelines of the SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Our primary focus is to maximize the production of Instinctively sound hatchlings into the environment while educating the public about what they can do to help, he says. Santee Cooper has been a partner with SCUTE and the state since 1989. Thanks to Santee Cooper, we are able to provide helpful information to thousands of visitors to SC.
This video should be dedicated to tireless volunteer sea turtle watchers of the South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiast (SCUTE) volunteer group, including Goffinet McLaren, Lynn Geuder LOA, Kay Mackall, Vic Young, Mary Schneider and Jeff McClary, SCUTE co-founder, who supervised the inventory and helped get 58 hatchlings on their way to the sea.
