February 6, 1987, KMOT-TV, Minot, ND - I've had a fascination with audio recording all my life. I remember my mom recording my voice on a small, portable reel-to-reel tape recorder and playing it back. Hearing my voice was startling and fascinating. Thus began a lifelong love affair with tapes, wire recorders, LPs, 45s, cassettes, CDs, USB and MP3s. But I especially love the old audio machines: Non-electric record players and wax cylinder players going back to just before the turn of the 20th century. Blaine Young owned Minot Antiques in 1987, and he had a huge collection of cylinders and players. It was a natural feature story for me to do. My only regret: Not buying one of the old wax cylinder players from Blaine. It's amazing the sound you can get from a non-electric, non-digital audio player. Transferred from 3/4 inch videotape via ADVC 300 and into iMovie HD. From Keith Darnay's personal video collection.
Back in the day when people thought it was cool to shove a kazoo down their throats.
