http://www.eco-rescue.info Governor of Amazonas State in Brazil, Carlos Braga, speaks after signing historic agreement with Governor Schwarzenegger at the Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles 2008. http://www.eco-rescue.com
35:14 For me what looks like it is a lessons for everyone is that
35:21 poverty and lack of education are the key drivers of de-forestation. If you want to fight against deforestation, you must give new standards, of living, if you don't give new standards of living to the people, we are going to lose this fight. 35:41 you are going to lose this fight. Because people dont do the deforestation because they want but because they need. 35:50 Otherwise one community in my state, a very small community, and I was talking to one father. And he has a huge family. and I was talking about how the forest is important, how the forest is providing environmental service for the world. and he answered to me with a very directly answer. 36:13 and he said don't ask me governor to take care of this tree if my child is crying with hungry. 36:20. And that is true. how can i ask for one Indonesian to care about the environmental, and care about the tree, care about the water supplies and everything if the childs are trying with hungry. it's impossible. 36:39 How can I ask the people to apply new technologies, to apply new tools with the forest if we don't give them a good education, 36:49 so, and I think we can do if we invest in quality of professors, if we invest in new technology, like in Amazon state right now, we are investing a lot in new technology and long-distance education. 37:07 we have more than 700 stations of IPTV which means Internet TV. Internet TV, these 700 stations, we have 20,000 young people learning how to manage the forest, 37:25 learning how to have a new quality of education, 37:28 so it is possible if we have help, if we have funding, it is possible to increase the quality of education and also to face the poverty, increase the income per year and get a better future, and secure for the future generations that we are going to preserve the forest. 37:47

Q: 37:48 and did you learn anything from Indonesia today or over the past two days about what they are doing?
oh sure, it 37:57 impresses me a lot what they are doing. they are trying to structure the environmental services. they are trying to put those environmental service like carbon capture and what ever in their market . 38:09 and we are always looking for what Indonesia is trying to do. 38:16 we are learn with the rights and wrong things all over the world, and we are learning together. 38:22

28:23 Q: and finally what drives you personally? Why do you care so much about the forest?
not really uhh
38:33 people. I love people. I care about the forest because I love people. 38:40 And I think in the future for my child and for your child and for my people, the forest will be the natural resources for them to get a better and better and better life. 38:50
