This is a test on my OLD PC:
- AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2500+ @ 1.800 Mhz
- GeForce FX 5200 (OLD!)
- 256 RAM (!!)

I started from a standard Kubuntu Feisty and tried to optimize speed, boot, various tricks and.. here we come:

The video shows a quite busy desktop, Konqueror, Kcalc, standard panels & applets, other windows and - most important - VBox RUNNING a Virtual Machine with Windows98.

Compiz Fusion is running and rendering all the windows quite well, as you can see with amazing speed (it's a 5200 fx card!).

I think more can be fine-tuned, maybe at deep kernel level, let me know

:-)

  • wow i have 2.6 celeron with 512ram and ati 9200se 128 and its fucking slower that this! but on 8.04! how can you optimize the linux!! i really wanna know :)

    cheers and beers

  • I worked out a little bit Compiz settings (no auto-FPS, no v-sync, and other), various optimizations, then removed lots of running services to keep memory footprint as lite as possible.

ATI drivers arent so good on linux actually.

PS: thanks for the beers! cheers :)

  • that's not an old pc.

pentium 133 with 16mb of ram is an old pc

  • "old" is relative to the fact of running a 3D composite system, applications and a virtual machine.

  • Thanks for showing people how good Linux works even on older machines! Great vid.

  • Thanks :)

  • perfect! I miss my old pc.

  • nothing is compatible!!

  • I have xubuntu 7.1 and compiz running on my athlon 1900xp 1gig ram and ati 9800pro, runs like a charm, makes my mate with his beastly pc and £400 vista sick every time he see's it muahah

  • Heck! If that was an XP install, you'd think the computer was of high-end hardware or something. The 2500+ ran it without a breaking a sweat.

  • Sweet! I'm buying an old 5200 for my old machine (with Ubuntu 7.10) and it would be sweet if compiz-fusion works this well!
