I made this video because I think the media headlines did a disservice to the public by oversimplifying the complex considerations behind a study looking at fruits and vegetables.

The study called the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Randomized Trial was published in JAMA last week:

Influence of a diet very high in vegetables, fruit, and fiber and low in fat on prognosis following treatment for breast cancer: the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) randomized trial.
JAMA. 2007 Jul 18;298(3):289-98.

There was, however, an editorial that went along with the study, that tries to address some key questions about the study (such as, did the women who were on the intervention actually follow through on the intervention -- the answer which seems to be unclear). Please see:
Fat, fruits, vegetables, and breast cancer survivorship. JAMA. 2007 Jul 18;298(3):335-6.

In the upcoming weeks, there should be more editorials published in specialty nutrition journals addressing the different methodological considerations about the study, as well as address the broader picture of the effects of eating healthy extra fruits and vegetables. I will try to keep this video description updated.

In the meantime, please know that eating extra fruits and vegetables will almost certainly bring good benefits to your health.

  • How about eating too much chocolate?

  • thanks for your question. eating dark chocolate in moderation, especially organic dark chocolate, can be good for your health (lowers your blood pressure among other things). the main side effect is that some people are allergic to it, or get migraines from it. the other one is that people might eat too much of it and it makes people gain weight... so in moderation and dark, organic chocolate is probably the best option.

  • I am so happy that you put this up. You can NEVER eat enough fruits and vegetables! This is the original diet that was made for mankind but especially here in America many people are health lazy and are solely influenced by media headlines and/or the popular crowd often without any clue that these headlines were either influenced by money and/or are made to make money. Meat is ok but it really isn't all that good for you since it just putrefies in your system.

  • thank you for your thoughts.

  • These are details that I didn't want to bore you all with, but I feel that the national news media shouldn't have just made a blanket statement, "eating extra fruits and vegetables does not prevent breast

cancer recurrence." I know for me, I first read that article and said, "wait, eating vegetables doesn't prevent cancer?" So if I, a med student, can get completely confused, then I was worried that others would also, if they had only saw the news without reading the actual study.

  • Chocolate has caffeine and works on the brain in a way that is similar to heroin and morphine, it causes physical addiction. Migraines, mood swings are probably the most immediate side effects of chocolate, milk chocolate being the worst of course.

  • Please email me your research... thanks

  • i agree with you but sometime i eat 100% raw coco choclate which has no sugar, what do you think about that?

  • its still better than meat which is primary cause of cancer

  • did you know that the vegetables that you eat every day are grown with fertilizer. And where do you think that fertilizer comes from? That fertulizer is made mostly from manure ( cow crap ) and human waste. And this practice is really environmentaly friendly.

  • They can believe it or not. They can also lactate. :)
