Faith and Hope

When I was young my parents left me
every day, and I was raised
by chairs - wild child in a serious tribe.

They spent a lot of time at prayer
was what I used to think. As plain
as day the table in their midst.

I depaired of such piety, but if
they saw into my doubting heart
they never folded up their laps

or punished me for having dreams
where they lay toppled on the kitchen floor,
thrashing their legs like panicked beetles.

Now, when your chair scrapes the floor
I always wince. I need a new law.
Make me put my head in your lap.
