Here I attempt to create copper by smelting copper ore (Malachite). But I cheat a little by using its compound Copper Carbonate. I mix 50g of it with about 5g of carbon.

  • I got the ore in its pure form as a chemical from ebay. Just search for "Copper Carbonate".

  • how do you make your furnace?

  • Making the furnace was easy. I used 24 bricks, 6 in each layer.

I left a gap between two of the bricks in the first layer so I could blow air in.

On top of the first layer I put steel wire mesh so that the charcoal could sit on it and the air can still get underneath. I then put three more layers of bricks on top and chucked in the charcoal.

  • I'm gonna give this a go soon. Having trouble finding info though, on the ore. I have sulfide ore - mostly bornite, some chalco. seems that malachite is easier...

  • i have an identical furnace! but do you mind if you can advise me to where i can purchase the ore and the other ingredients used? thanks.
