Wouldn't it be easier to set the cushions on a sliding chassis so you could have the sofa against a wall, fold the back down, slide the sleeping surface with having to move the actual sofa, and then splay out the mattress?

Well, this type of mechanism is limited, as you can't place this against a wall, and convert it into the bed.

sry to say that, but such sofas which can be transformed into a bed are called cannapee (some different writings and mecanisms, but truly old.
Only halfway new about, yours can be used as desk/board as well

looks great but usually sofas are backed up on walls, its very inconvenient to move a whole sofa just to turn it into a bed
