I hooked up my Arduino board running http://umlautllama.com/rand/?arduino-simplelightshow-pde.txt this program to a power switching box I made in 2007, and hooked that up to a half dozen light strands, and... Festive light show!
The software lets you select from 10 patterns, variable speed, a few different effects - invert lights, reverse pattern, autoswitch patterns every 2 seconds. The patterns are based on the DAMMIT light controller we had back at Computer Science House in college - cylon, double cylon, blink, sine bounce, build & break down, roll, chaser, etc.
The hardware is a few wall outlets mounted in a 3-bay plastic wall box, with four solid state relays controlled by an Arduino NG http://arduino.cc There's an extra breadboard on there with the three potentiometers for control, and 8 LEDs as a basic pattern display. There is no protection around the solid state relay terminals, so they're probably a bit dangerous - live 110 exposed. Whee!
nice idea :d

I just saw the end of your video and saw that you had it hooked up to the computer, I would want the glasses to be all hardware...

That is awesome. I want to make some glasses that you wear that have light patterns going on in front of your eyes (which are closed) Could you tell me how to do that?
