Can't you just swab in the back of someones cheeks? Why the throat??

During lung infection or tonsillitis, the health care provider may need to scrape the back of the throat with the swab several times. This helps improve the chances of detecting bacteria. Oppose to this, saliva, may rinsing-off unwanted bacteria minimizing chances of getting bacteria of interest.
