What is anonymous?

Anonymous is a collective of every kind of person, of every race, from every country, of every faith and creed. We are a collection of individuals united by ideas. You likely know Anonymous, although you don't know exactly who we are. We are your brothers and sisters, your parents and children, your superiors and your underlings. We are the concerned citizens standing next to you. Anonymous is everywhere, yet nowhere. Our strength lies in our numbers. Our will as a whole is the combined will of individuals. Our greatest advantage is a knowledge of the fundamentals we share as human beings. This knowledge is a fruit of our anonymity.

The group itself started out on the Internet image boards and forums, where everyone could come to discuss whatever they wanted. The greatest of these image board's was known as 4chan. The group had an underlying feeling of freedom - the Internet was in its infancy and everyone knew they were standing on the forefront of a new frontier like no one had ever seen before. The Internet represented a grand borderless arena where anyone could bring their ideas, their hopes, their plans, and through their own innovation that could make their dreams come true. The web became a symbol of absolute equality, and that is precisely what drove Anonymous: by maintaining everyone's anonymity, everyone was equal. No one had to think about gender, race, religion, creed, nationality; everything that formerly separated us as humans wasn't even given a thought. Everyone spoke freely, without restriction, reveling in the freedom that only the Internet could provide.

Naturally, some people did abuse that freedom, these users were, and are still known as "The Internet Hate Machine. Not everyone participating did abuse their power of anonymity In fact, more often than not, the whole thing was just downright silly. But that was okay, because that's what everyone chose to do with their freedom through absolute equality.
Anonymous as it is today maintains the equality that they feel can only be achieved through anonymity, given the prejudices and circumstances of the time in which we live. Anonymous is at once fiercely altrustic, but also insanely ridiculous. It is this dichotomy that makes Anonymous so unique, so compelling, and so much fun.

Anonymous is leaderless, because Anonymous is everyone. Anonymous is made up of all the John and Jane Does in the world, and we'd like to keep it that way. With leaders come hierarchy, with hierarchy comes class, with class comes separation, and separation would destroy the equality we've worked so hard to build. Only here on the Internet can that happen and we'll hold onto it as long as we can.

Anonymous has left its mark on society more than once. Previous Anonymous projects have resulted in the closing of the white-supremacist radio show produced by Hal Turner, and the criminal prosecution of Canadian pedophile Chris Forcand. Anonymous has been called a "Cyber Vigilante Group" by The Toronto Sun and Global News, though in reality we are much more than that.

That's who we are and where we came from. But not too long ago, Anonymous changed into someting entirely new, building upon the foundation established in the early days of the Internet. Suddenly the anonymity that gave us freedom also gave us the perfect platform to protest a single organization infamous for its unrelenting vicious attacks against anyone who dared stand against them.

We Are Anonymous, We Are Legion, We do not forgive, we do not forget.

Until Next time. This is Anonymous
